Columbus Day???

Why do we celebrate Columbus Day in the United States? He did not, as far as I have read, ever even reach our country. Furthermore, the lands that he did reach were not unpopulated areas. They had native people living there already. How could Christopher Columbus discover a place that was not lost to all of the people who already called it home? If any ole person can just go around saying they are discovering places then we should all start doing that. I think I will go to Montana, stake a flag in the ground and give the post office a day off. Hey it worked for Columbus!

I agree! He was one lucky fool to be granted such fame based only on his claims. I read "A Voyage Long and Strange" a while ago about the discovery of the New World, which was really interesting. Learned so much about that man and all the others who came after him exploiting both lands and natives.

I wrote about it too :)

Yeah, I always think about that on Columbus' Day. Like, we're celebrating the initial step of what was ultimately genocide of the natives?
